#popupspaces

It’s been a long windy road from starting Bizoo zine a decade ago in the backwaters of Toowoomba town to taking the final book across Australia’s capital cities and regional towns while we deliver planned and guerrilla workshops on all things DIY/DIT (Do It Yourself/Do It Together).

Last year while touring through regional QLD, Australia, one of the hardest things to track down was a venue that suited our needs and offered as much access as possible to potential participants. A portable pop up venue out on the street, in laneways, on the beach, or at festivals or parties in the backyard.

With a love of bicycles and bringing the workshop to the people, this pop up bike trailer has been designed to fold down and away for plane and car trips, but fold out to ride around the country too. Workshops on gardening, stenciling, zine making, homebrew beers – what can’t you do with your own pop up venue ?

West End Block Party!

September 17th, 2012

Add your secrets to the West End Block Party CULT-ure Map zine!

The West End community is going from strength to strength. The massive Kurilpa Derby – a massive street fest and DIY downhill race along the main street – was only a few weeks ago and now the West End Block Party is just around the corner, this Saturday, September 22nd.

The Block Party brings together the best of West Ends community passions. Locals Dubmarine, Ice Cream Factory Performers, Kingfisha, Kooii, Mouldy Lovers, Geppetto, Pastel Blaze, Vespyro, Super Poets, School Fight and One Dragon Two Dragon have been confirmed to lace the day with tunes while you get stuck into the arts workshops.

Amongst the frenzy are our Papier-mache friends who are creating native Australian birds to highlight the 145 bird species so far identified at Bimblebox Nature Refuge that are under attack due to a proposed coal mine.

From 4pm – 6pm the Bizoo crew join the party. We have been invited along to create a CULT-ure Map zine! You know those boring tourist guides found at backpackers and bus interchanges that show only the money spinning attractions and restaurants that have paid to be on the map? Stuff that. We want to reclaim the streets by highlighting the real events, attractions, cheap eats, artist-run spaces and affordable or free events that only locals would know about! In short – we want you to add your secrets to the map.

The beauty of West End is in its community, its hands on and engaged people. It doesn’t live online, on Facebook or in a blog, instead kicking its heels down the main street, up the nearest tree or tinkering under the house.

Bizoo is coming with your help to create and compile, print and distribute the 4101 CULT-ure Map at the Block Party. We’ll bring along all the resources and creative tools you need to add your story, insights and secrets. See you there !
